Our commitment to social responsibility goes hand in hand with our business values, and we are dedicated to creating a positive impact in the communities we operate in.
In a recent demonstration of this commitment, we joined forces with First Quantum Minerals (FQM) to build a large ablution block at the Kijilamatambo Primary School in Solwezi, Zambia.
Mader’s journey with the Solwezi community goes back to 2017, when we initially engaged with the Solwezi Round Table through the Rotary of Solwezi whilst operating in the region. Following this, we proudly sponsored the construction of a classroom block, with construction completed in 2018.
Fast forward to today, the school has grown from 400 students in 2017, to now providing education for over 1,000 eager minds – with only two toilets on the premises, used by students, faculty and the wider community. Recognising the potential to enhance their school experience and overall community wellbeing, Mader embarked on a groundbreaking project to construct a solar-powered ablution block.
The project commenced in August 2023 and has now been completed. The community celebrated the handover of the facility with an opening ceremony attended by the Solwezi Deputy Mayor, Mr. Alex Pupe; representatives from the Provincial Education Office, Mader Technical Specialist, Masautuso Phiri; and FQM Assistant General Manager, Colin Du Plessis.
Senior Headman Mulowanyama also attended the affair, expressing his gratitude on behalf of His Royal Highness Chief Kapijimpanga, to Mader Group and Kansanshi Mining PLC (recently merged with FQM) for their contribution to the community.
Mader Group Chief Executive, Justin Nuich, commented that the collaboration with FQM was a deeply rewarding experience.
“We’d like to firstly extend our gratitude to the team at FQM who helped us bring this project to life. Their invaluable partnership, assistance in design, construction and management of the project has been instrumental to its success. The six-toilet block features a solar-powered water pumping system and bore, which is a reliable and sustainable source for flushing toilets. This substantial improvement is more than just a physical upgrade; it's a significant boost to the overall hygiene, sanitation, and wellbeing of the school community.”
“Lastly, a huge thank you to the Mader employees, customers and industry friends who generously donated and supported the ‘Strong Minds, Strong Mines’ event last year. Your support has enabled us to bring our vision to life and make a significant difference to the community.”
Together, we're creating a brighter future and exemplifying what Mader was built on – passion, teamwork and comradery.
