What It’s Really Like Working in Underground Heavy Equipment
If you’re looking for a stable, well-paying trade that keeps your hands busy and your mind sharp, becoming an underground heavy equipment mechanic might be the move you’ve been waiting for.
A Legacy of Mechanics: Dustin’s Story
Dustin didn’t just choose this industry, he was raised in it. He’s a third-generation mechanic with a grandfather and father who both worked as heavy equipment mechanics. Dustin followed in their footsteps and has now spent over 20 years turning wrenches both underground and in the field.
His first major job?
A full frame-up rebuild on a CAT D11R dozer.
No shortcuts. No easy wins. Just hands-on learning and the satisfaction of bringing a machine back to life from the ground up.
When asked about his favorite machine, Dustin doesn’t hesitate:
“992G. Best loader CAT ever made.”
For Dustin, the benefits go beyond the paycheck.
“It’s a solid industry. I’ve always had work, the bills get paid, and there’s food on the table. That’s what matters.”
So why’s he still in the game after 20 years?
Because the work is solid, the team’s good, and he gets to spend his RNR where it counts.
“I’m with my kids. We’re hunting, fishing, or out on the lake. That’s the good stuff!“
